Vanilla, unmodified Minecraft has no sound. At all.
Using f3 + s makes a *few* sounds come back. Some random pig noises, block breaking and placing. Nothing else.
Installing the Open sound dlls did absolutely nothing. Yes, I followed all the instructions in the stupid article, including using the minecraft sound dlls.
Somebody help me. It simultaneously happened to me and my girlfriend, right after we updated to 1.4.4.
I'm going to kill something. Help. For the love of God.

I had the same problem after updating, and what fixed it for me was using the force update in the launcher options.
edit: Well it seems that 'mostly' fixed it. Sound wont play for a few seconds after loading but eventually kicks in.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Defrag, disk check, uninstalling and reinstalling java, uninstalling and reinstalling minecraft, updated, NOT updated, IT HAS NO SOUND
No matter what, I was missing the files from my resources. Whether I fresh installed then updated or not. I had to manually download them.
This is a Big Problem. It needs to be addressed. To the dude above me, your sounds work now, right? You don't need them? Because if you do I'd be glad to upload them.
The only way i found out how to get my sound back was i copied my old resource file (From my 1.4.2 backup file) and put it in my newly updated minecraft folder. So far everything is working again sound wise, so hopefully you have a backup folder to pull from (always have a backup folder)
Disable your AV for 5-10 minutes while playing minecraft.
Sound files download while playing, not as part of the update. Many AV block the download.
AVG is well known for blocking the sound download. In AVG you can just disable the Link Scan portion and it will download. Some firewalls also block the sound download. When I had zonealarm I had to lower the global security level in order for the sound download to make it.

At the moment I just did an all night defrag and disk check.
I'm going to uninstall and reinstall Java and try that to see if it works.
The thing is, even though it happened after an update, I tried deleting minecraft. Reinstalled an unpatched version, and the sound still fails.
This was NEVER a problem until the point I updated to 1.4.4. I'm super suspicious of Java.

I don't have something that silly.
But, the sound files downloading I did not know. That's good information to have. I know what my issue is now.
See, I installed and updated, then went offline and tried to play.
