I was just gifted Minecraft and starting playing this morning on my laptop. I noticed I can hear all actions, e.g. the pig squeals when I kill it and I can tell the difference between walking on grass and stone, but I don't have any ambient music. I triple checked that music was at 100% in the options screen and nothing was disabled on my laptop. Having searched the forum, I noticed another thread mentioning the resource folder, and after checking it, I can see there are files for the music. Any ideas?

Music isn't constant, it only plays at certain times or in certain places, or if you are playing a music disk. Try making a creative world and playing a music disk in a jukebox, see if you hear anything.

As Wormy says most of the ambient sound are triggered by certain times or conditions. For example certain music may start playing before dawn.
