I am using an ATI Radeon 4850 HD video card and can't play Minecraft for more than a minute without getting errors that pause the game 3 times and then crash the computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the 12-8_xp32_dd_ccc and the 12-6-legacy_xp32_dd_cc_whql drivers with no help from either. The 12-8 would actually give me an error message and want to report it and the 12-6 only pause the game with no message. They both freeze my computer forcing me to restart after 3 such errors. I am running Windows XP. I am using the mods WMLL (Whats My Light Level) and Rei's Mini-map. It also does not matter if I am running ANY mods or not as this happens all the time with Minecraft and only Minecraft.
I am at my wits end here. Anyone have any suggestions?
Go to into add and remove programs look for catalyst drivers might be called something different (not on my desktop sorry lol) you want to fully uninstall it drivers the controll center everything then you want to redownload the drivers from ATI Or if you have a laptop you want to go to the laptop maker website and download the drivers there.
Thanks, I tried that after my 4th attempt at it before I even posted this. That is when I stopped getting the error messages and the game just paused when an error occured.
I just uninstalled it all again and this time I removed every single scrap of AMD/ATI/Catalyst stuff I could find and cleaned the registry afterwards. I then rebooted and reinstalled the 12-6 drivers. I tried Minecraft out and got an error about 15 seconds in, another error after 45 seconds and then it all froze up after the 3rd error about 1 minute in.
I tell you, I used to love ATI! Now I just want to rip the dang card out and smash it into pieces and buy another card! I just wish I had the money to do so.... *sigh*
Could also be a over heating problem. Sometimes those can cause unknowen and odd problems like games crashing blue screens FPS loss. What is the temp. of your video card?
Believe me when I say that it is not over heating. I just replaced a burnt out fan a couple of months ago, so I do keep up on them to make sure they are working. Besides I checked the video card to see if it was hot and it wasn't. I've had this problem after just starting up my computer, so it's not heat.
If you had a over heating issue before and the fan died, It might of done some damage not seen by the eye while looking at it. Does it effect any other games you play just minecraft?
I found out that it was both Rei's Mini-map and Optifine HD that was causing my problems. I was mistaken about it having problems while playing Vanilla (no mods.) I got a MagicLoader and tried all of my mods that I used individually and found it was those two mods. Rei's Mini-map caused a few little errors, but none that caused the game to freeze. Optifine after 3 errors froze the game up. I also found that the errors messed with Java. If I Ctrl-Alt-Del and stop Java, I was able to continue using the computer, but would have to restart if I wanted to play Minecraft again. If I didn't restart before playing Minecraft again, I got the Bad Video Driver error.
As for it maybe being a heating problem, it isn't. After I replaced the fan, I found that one of the capacitors in the mainboard had gone bad and a friend of mine replaced ALL the capacitors with high end capacitors. No more heating problems.
Thank you all for your help!

I still have a couple of errors, but they are very far apart and I have not crashed since I changed the setting.
I hope this helps someone in the future!
