I downloaded from the official site, and at first wasnt evena ble to load the game. it would freeze my whole computer at the end of the loading screen.
I tried runing the minecraft diagnostics tool, and it ran however it will freeze whenever a zombie attacks, and if i go under water and come back out the sound is gone until I close the client and restart it. I'm fairly sure i shouldn't be having these issues, my PC is not at all a pushover.
intel R 2g processor, 3 gigs ram, more than 60 gigs of free space, ATI graphics card, windows XP pro, etc. It was made to handle more than Minecraft. Any ideas what's going on?

Sorry to tell you but that PC is a complete pushover. I mean it really all depends on the exact CPU and GPU but that computer is pretty bad. Chances are it just isn't powerful enough (keep in mind that MC relies more on CPU than RAM or GPU and only uses one core)
My advice:
Detailed specs - click start, right click My Computer, and click properties and copy that info. Then go to start, Run, and type dxdiag and copy all the information from there. Then post it
Uninstall java and reinstall, same with Minecraft
Install Optifine

it's refurbished. it was a software company computer that was just recently replaced with a new model. it's been reformatted and everything. it's the best computer i've ever had in all actuality. But yes really, no lag what so ever. My brothers lappy, unknown specs, plays it fine without crashing or anything but lags like crazy. As for this one, It really only had the OS when i had it refurbished. So maybe i'm missing something that keeps it from working properly. I installed java and DX on it just this week, but i cant for the life of me think of what else might be wrong with it. It's the first computer that hasn't overheated or ragequit when i play Civilization 4 with max graphics and huge maps. But like i said, when i run the Minecraft diagnostic tool it opens up just fine but it doesn't use the normal client, it runs it right on Java.
Even so it still crashes when i run into certain mobs (not all mobs) and the sound keeps going out and not coming back when i resubmerge from water.
You don't think it'd have anything to do with my antivirus software or anything do you?
I'm not particularly savvy when it comes to program conflicts.
I've isolated the issue when i can get it to run using just Java. Any interaction with a Zombie causes the game to freeze. I've run through and killed slimes, skeletons, creepers, squids, pigs, sheep, chickens but it only ever freezes the game when I interact with Zombies (not kill. Even if it just attacks me or i attack it, it will freeze.) I think the initial frozen loading was an issue between my Comp and the default Client. Up till i have an encounter with a zombie i can play for hours without any issue aside the occasional loss of sound.

I cant say for sure, all i know is that the computer was just recently obsoleted by a new company model . So it's at least a few years old. Dom was likely correct in a 5-6 year assumption considering it's dual core. However i must interject with my brothers lap top is much more obsolete. So much so that he acquired it for 20 dollars and windows ME. Yet it never crashes, simply lags.Must admit though it does seem a bit interesting that an "outdated" computer like mine gets such a good FPS yet only has issues with one mob. I haven't had a single issue with lag yet however i have gotten a few messages saying the virtual memory was too low.

I think the best course of action would be to delete the 'bin' folder that is in the 'minecraft' folder and let it download all the game files again.
If it's only causing you to freeze on the one mob, it's likely something got damaged within the game files.

I get excellent performance on FPS and everything else but the game keeps freezing/crashing. Otherwise it runs like a dream, no lag what so ever.

Retired StaffIf it's only causing you to freeze on the one mob, it's likely something got damaged within the game files.
