I am having an issue harvesting blocks with any tool but the "best" tool for the job(dirt I need a shovel, stone I need a pickaxe etc...) when I dont have the "right" tool I just swing once then stop doing no damage to the block.
This problem seems to occur only when I shift from creative mode to survival.
I've tried restarting minecraft, my computer, force updating minecraft, using different operating systems(windows 7 and 8)

ahh no, I am hitting once no matter what happens I can hold my mouse button down for an hour and it will still only swing once

When you get close to a block, a black outline will appear around it. Do you see this outline when you get close to a block?

You're in Adventure Mode. Singleplayer or Multiplayer?
If in Singleplayer, press ESC and click on Open to LAN and allow cheats. Then start. Then type '/gamemode 0' into the chat.
Multiplayer, you may be able to do it yourself or not.

thank you thank you thank you, I was using /gamemode 2 thinking that was survival mode
