I have a problem with my video card. Often, when I play 3d games, I get blue lines and/or graphical artifacts on my screen, followed by the graphics driver crashing and restarting itself. This entails the screen going black for a few seconds and then coming back again. If I'm not in a game when this happens, Windows always tells me that the graphics driver crashed and recovered.
Most games can handle this okay. They recover when the graphics driver comes back. But Minecraft is one of the few games that doesn't seem to. After this happens, Minecraft is left completely white with the java not responding.
There's probably nothing I can do about this other than try to troubleshoot the problem on my end. But is there anything the devs can do to fix it so Minecraft can recover from a graphics crash like that?
There is not likely anything they can do. It's more a java issue then minecraft itself. If your graphics driver crashes it's going to take java with it.
Have you tried updating the drivers for the card?
Checked it's cooling fan?
Downloaded a program to monitor temperature?
It's been a consistent problem even through multiple driver upgrades. I used to have RivaTuner but I haven't had that recently. Maybe that's what it is. I don't have a temperature monitor or a fan speed control anymore.
Ah, thank you. I installed ATI Tray Tools before I saw your post. It seems to have an automatic fan speed adjustment functionality, so in the days ahead I'll see how that works.
I don't overclock. I only use tools like that to adjust the fan speed. The card is an ATI Radeon HD 3870, and the fan in that card doesn't seem to speed up on its own unless you install tools to do it.
I've been googling, but I have no where to look for a crash log. Google searching isn't helping at all.
I've been wondering if it might be the power supply. Even when I'm not playing games, sometimes I get blue vertical lines or white horizontal lines on my screen, and I've read some places that that's a symptom of power issues.
But the power supply is an ABS Tagan BZ800 800w, which should be more than enough to handle the hardware I have by an extra 200w.. But I've also heard people complain that that power supply is faulty, so I don't know.
I looked up that power supply and nearly died, [email protected](6 Rails). That, is a recipe for disaster. No PSU of 800 watts~ needs 6 rails, also 64 amps, that like 768~ watts on all on 12volts. That leaves hardly anything for rest.
So it very well could be power supply. Maybe you really should get a mod to move this to CST/SCT "computer off topic section" of MCF.
This is expanding beyound a minecraft client issue.

Retired Staff65C is actually fine for a GPU under load, but not idle. They can go up to 80C~ under high load.
Do you get any crash logs or etc when this happens?
What makes me wonder, is all the tools you have installed. ATI tools and Riva Tuner are mostly for overclocking.

So it sounds like you're saying that the 12 volt connector(s) or whatever are taking almost all the power?
It has a "Turbo" switch that connects the rails together I guess. Does that make a difference?
It was my first build. The only thing I wasn't sure about was the power supply, so I overcompensated when I chose it.
