I have been having some issues connecting to the News/Login/Update servers from my MineCraft Client on my GamingPC. Issues don't seem to effect my WorkPC (same home network).
I have been fiddling around, allowing each IP that fails a connection, to be allowed through. Each time this happens I have a connection issue on yet another IP address.
Here are the IP addresses that I have so far logged the Client trying to connect to:
I have come to 2 conclusions.
1. Everytime the client fails, it stores that ip as failed and tries a new one that Mojang uses.
2. I have a trojan masked as a client, that is tricking me into opening as many ip addresses as it can.
So that I know more of what is going one, do Mojang really have that many IP addresses?
Which ones can I safely allow through my firewall?
Has Mojang simply acquired a range of IP addresses such as 66.6.36.0 and uses them as needed?
I checked a couple of those addresses, one was a Tumblr address another was an amazonaws address.
So the two I checked are reasonable.
Tumblr is where the news feed comes from.
amazonaws is where minecraft files are downloaded from
These are often server pools, so many IP addresses, which rotate and are dependent upon your location.
Trying to approve minecraft to connect only to certain addresses is likely to be a chore. Tumblr.com might be 5 address today, and 5 different ones tomorrow. assets.minecraft.com might be another 5, etc.
Does it ever connect and get past? If it never connects despite approving more and more addresses, then it could be the IPv6 issue as mentioned, where Java 7 (depending on your PC's network configuration) may only use IPv6 to [try to] connect, despite the fact that it won't work.

I shall look into this bug you mention.
I'd like to reduce the number of IP addresses I have to allow through, for security reasons.
For the most simple solution:
1. Uninstall all instances of Java7
2. Install Java6 http://www.java.com/en/download/manual_v6.jsp
