Hey, I know theres been alot of people complaining about issues with stuck keys and getting stuck moving in one direction and I know that while reading all about these issues there have been all kinds of suggestions like get a new keyboard, turn off sticky keys, get a new computer, download the lastest lwjgl, change your settings, get the latest java etc, clean your keyboard, it's your fault because I'm not having this issue, you're using the wrong browser, you have lazy fingers, you're doing it wrong, update this, update that, ..etc.
I started having this issue with 1.4.2. When moving around in my world sometimes I'll get stuck moving in one direction (as in, I'll continue moving in that direction until I either hit a wall, die and respawn, close the game and reopen. If I press in the direction that I'm stuck in it'll stop. I can't reproduce the issue with any combination of movements or keystrokes, it just seems to occur randomly while moving. I can cite players noting this issue in forums all over the internet with versions all the way back to 1.8 so far. I've been doing research trying to fix it and have tried all sorts of things like using optifine, lwjgl updates and updateing my java version (as mentioned above). So far nothing has resolved it.
I'm an IT consultant and I know that when someone has an issue the first thing you need is to be able to reproduce the issue so you can observe it happening. While I havent found a way to do this yet, the plethora of other people describing the same issue should be evidence enough that there's something going on. I'm running windows XP x86 home but I've heard lots of people with Linux, Mac OSX, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 all having the same issue.
My friend who I recently turned on to minecraft is having the same issue on his computer (he's playing 1.4.2 also). It's getting to be a bit unplayable when you're trying to negotiate delicate environments with hazards present in survival mode. I should note that we've been playing offline or with a LAN server while experiencing these issues.
Anyone else? Can we pinpoint the issue or reproduce it?
Okay, I may have figured it out. It doesn't seem to be fixed 100% but here's what I did:
Removed minecraft (after backing up my 'saves' folder')
Removed all versions of Java from my computer (including Javafx)
Rebooted
Reinstalled only Java 7 from Java.com
Check it for updates (there were none)
Reinstalled Minecraft 1.4.3pre
Installed the latest lwjgl
Rebooted
So far it's only happened to me once since I've done this. I realized that I had java 7, java 6, java 5 and javafx installed so I decided to do a clean Java reinstall. Most of the forum messages I read involved people running XP or Vista and likely have older java versions installed. Rather foolish on my part not to have tried this in the first place since Java doesnt remove older versions when you install a new version. Like I said, it doesn't seem to be totally fixed but I've been trying to reproduce the bug for an hour (by running around at night in creative with a sword moving erratically and jumping while attacking enemies.) I just reset it to night time and keep attacking things. So far it's only happened to me once or twice, which is good since before it was happening very frequently. It seems to happen more often if your client is lagging due to low resources on your computer.
It seems quite playable now. I'll post back if I learn anything else...
