This is going to seem silly, but is your sound setting on Minecraft up? I had this "issue" yesterday.
As for the terrain.. I think it's supposed to look like that on default.
nah, you don't sound silly. I've already gone through all the "stupid" things to mess up the sound. Sound effects and music were set to 100%, it was up on the volume exualizer of the computer, I pressed f3+S, restarted the computer, made sure I had the proper sound files. Only one i have done was reinstalled minecraft, but I felt I didn't need to since I swapped the entire .minecraft folder when I tested the older version to rule out a version glitch.
as for the graphics, lemme grab a screenshot from underground to better show what I'm talking about...
EDIT: got the underground screenshots up
I dare you to move your cursor to the green box on the bottom left of these words, and give it a click. I would give you a diamond, but I've lost it.
Give my channel a view would you? http://www.youtube.com/user/xDelay3d
Try deleting the resources folder in mc, then only press F3+S.. So you see nothing at all when underground? You're at like, y48. No torch?
Gah! The brightness on my desktop is set kinda high.... lemme get some lighted underground screenies to replace those.
Gonna try what you suggested, then if it fails take the lighted underground screenshots.
Check your resources and see whether your sounds have been downloaded fully? You might want to report the main post to a mod so this might be moved to modded/unmodded client support. I haven't been successful trying to recreate your blue lines there >.<

I'm going to try redownloading minecraft and seeing if that fixes it. Also I get the graphical error with any texture pack I use. They all have lines around the edges. The lines appear to show either the sky, water, or lava. The lines don't sho as often in well-lit areas, but still it's annoying.
Okay, changing the settings fixed my graphic issue, but I'm still having problems with the sound :/
when I reinstalled minecraft, some of the sounds started working. An example is I could hear chickens, but not pigs. I figured it was because my laptop didn't download it properly, so I did it again. Now I hear nothing. Not even the music which I could hear before.
Btw, my desktop (what I play minecraft on) isn't connected to the internet, so I have to download everything on my laptop and move it over.
You have to make sure your sounds are downloaded fully, after F3+s, then restart minecraft. Downloading then transferring doesn't make a difference, it'll still work, provided all your sounds are correctly downloaded.. Go looksee in your resources folder.. play a few sounds and see if they work?
Edit : I found a comment by Hidinginthelight and.. It might be of help.
It seems in the 1.4 update there was a small change to the sound codec used for minecraft.
It has caused issues on some systems and this fix has worked for some users.
This isn't guaranteed to work for your system, but it's something to try.
If you have a backup of a 1.3.2 minecraft.jar skip this first part and use that one.
First you need to download MCnostalgia or MultiMC to get a 1.3.2 version of minecraft. I recommend MultiMC, just because the interface is a bit easier to understand and work with.
In MutiMC you create a new instance.
Run it once. Close it. No need to make a world just need to get to the menu screen.
Select the instance in the left panel, then click downgrade on the right panel of the launcher.
Here is where you can use an old back up if you have one already.
Browse into the folder that you created the instance in (or your back up) and open the minecraft.jar in winrar or 7zip.
go to this location inside the jar: minecraft.jar\paulscode\sound\codecs
Leave that window open.
Browse into your 1.4.2 install of minecraft, the one that isn't working well.
Again open the jar in winrar or 7zip.
Navigate to the same location: minecraft.jar\paulscode\sound\codecs
( So now you'll have two winrar or 7zip windows open. One with the 1.3.2 minecraft.jar and one with the 1.4.2 minecraft.jar. Both to the same location: minecraft.jar\paulscode\sound\codecs. Positioning them side by side on your screen will help, so you can see both at the same time. )
From the 1.3.2 jar that you have open you want to click and drag the CodecJOrbis.class file into the 1.4.2 jar that you have open. ( Like installing jar mods if you are familiar with that. )
Close both windows. Accept any confirmations that pop up.
Play the 1.4.2 world again and see if that fixes the issue.

okay, I followed those instructions to a T, and still nuffin. -sighs- it's too late to deal with this any more... If anyone else has a clue as to what's going on feel free to post it. I'll check this out later. For now, good night x.x
I'm going to grab the 1.4.3 pre-relase and see if that helps. I really need to figure out why my sounds aren't working! I've tried everything I can think of.
Didn't want to get the new one, because i have somemods I don't want to lose.
bumping in hopes that someone reads this. Haven't been able to play on my map since my sound stopped (hardcore mode nomad lifestyle with no sound is suicide)
Go into your minecraft folder.
Right click on the resources folder, and select properties.
What Size does it say the resources folder is?
39.8 MB (41,825,339 bytes)
it also says it has 293 files, 27 folders.
I have all the sound files in it, and I was certain it's not the resources folder because when I tested out minecraft beta 1.7.2 I swapped EVERYTHING from the old minecraft (I like to be thorough with my backups.) It didn't work still so I cleaned it out and reinstalled 1.4.2 and still the same issue.
Ya, I'm up to 441 files 43 folders. On a brand new install. (I had actually just reinstalled windows earlier today on a new HD)
Try playing with you anti virus disabled. (Sounds download while your playing, not during the install of the game)
If you have AVG anti virus, it's the link scan portion that you need to disable. I have heard mcAfee blocks the sound download as well. Not sure of any others off hand, but I'm sure others can also.
Some firewalls can block the sound download also, I had Zone alarm for a while and that blocked java from connecting to the server to download the sounds.
Generally it only takes 5-10 minutes to get all the sound files downloaded.
As for the terrain.. I think it's supposed to look like that on default.
Not a horse or pony.
