I've recently been playing Minecraft once again, and I'm enjoying the game once more! There have been a number of changes since I last enjoyed things to make the game quite refreshing once more.
My current issue is about creating maps in game. When I first started my world (which was just before the newest Scary patch), and got materials to make a map, things went fine. When I got to the edge of that first map, I tried to create a second map (which was AFTER patch 1.4.2) to keep exploring eastward, and that's when the glitch happened. The new map appears VERY zoomed in - the circle that highlights your visual range on the regular map (and thus fills up so much of the map at a time) extends easily outside of the borders of the new map. I threw out the map and picked it back up with no change. I restarted the game with no change. I eventually abandoned the map entirely and found out how I can zoom out a map - so my Map_0 which WAS working just became zoomed out and I kept exploring.
As is expected to happen from time to time though, my character has since died by falling into a big pit of lava while wandering the Nether, thus making my original map unretrievable. Recreating all my gear I was ready to go on when, woe is me, my newly minted Map_3 ALSO displays all the weirdness that Map_1 had, namely that it was super zoomed in and pretty much pointless as far as maps are concerned.
I am running one of two x256 texture packs at the time of this message, but I have no other mods to the game. What can I do to fix these issues because it makes exploring REALLY miserable if I don't at least have a map and it kills my desire to push on through my lava soaked hardship.
"New maps are crafted at a scale factor of 1:1. A zoomed in maps can be zoomed out by re-crafting it with another 8 pieces of paper on a crafting table. Each time this is done, the scale increases - 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16 with a map scale of 1:16 being the current maximum."
That's what you're referring to as far as the map changes? I'll try to rephrase my glitch.
Map_0, the original one I made, was at a 1:1 zoom. I recrafted it to a 1:2 ratio without error. Map_1 and Map_3 never started at a 1:1 ratio. They have more like a 16:1 ratio - they're super zoomed in. They're useless to me since the map covers one quarter of the area I can normally see revealed upon a map when you're standing looking about. I need to know how to fix it, and/or why it's even happening in the first place now...
I have the same issue. I want a zoomed out version of my map but I have no clue how. The only reason why I want it is because I'm on an island and I want to hang the map on an item frame just for aesthetics purposes.

Are you shift clicking the maps out of the crafting table? My best guess if you are is that the game is creating a copy of your existing map but at the 1:1 ratio.
im having the same problem...im also noticing when i make a map im not standing in the center of it like i used to...
Thats because the new maps snap to a grid. The grid you're in will be the center of the map as you zoom it out, but you may not be in the center of that grid when it is first used.

I'm not shift clicking them out of the crafting table. If I create a map, and remove it as per normal, it goes into my inventory as a non descript map. The minute I try and 'use' it, it creates a map that's super zoomed in. Again, this is not a 1:1 ratio. It's a zooming issue which makes the map 16:1... it's unusable.
With the new patch out and this 'glitch' unresolved, I'm still unsure how to fix it, which makes exploration in the game very problematic. Any other advice???
I don't see anyone reporting this type of issue on the Mojira bug reporting site. Because of that I would recommend that you do a clean install by renaming your .minecraft folder to .minecraft_old and use the launcher to reinstall. Check the maps and your world out BEFORE you install HD textures and support to see how they are working. If you only experience this issue after reinstalling what you're using for HD texture support you know it's not an issue caused by the minecraft client. If it does still happen then you should report your issue on Mojira.
So, I reported the bug on the Mojira forum. According to the mod who looked at my uploaded snapshot, the game is working accordingly, since my map IS a 1:1 ratio. Which just leaves me confused.
What was the original map ratio before 1.4.2? Because a map at a 1:1 ratio seems utterly useless - they simply changed the process so I need tons more paper to make a traditional map nowadays?

The old map was an 8:1 ratio which is the 4th step now in the new map system. As to why...well why not? Some people might find more local map detail useful for different reasons. Just because you don't doesn't mean it isn't useful. Now we have a more versatile map that not only goes larger in scale but also smaller.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
