OK, yes this is another OpenGL problem. I'm using an Intel card, but my problem is that my drivers are up to date and I'm still getting this error. Yes I've tried to update and yes I've restarted my computer. Please help.
It seems that Minecraft and Intel Drivers are somehow incompatible, I have the same issue, and so far the only way I am able to run it is by making a batch file using MCpatcher's 'test' mode, to me it seems that somewhere between launcher and minecraft something goes wrong.
However using the batch file means it only runs in Offline mode, which means no multiplayer,no skins, and achievements are wiped every time you quit and restart. It's not a driver issue, it's not a java issue, it's a Minecraft issue alone, other OpenGL programs using the same lwjgl libraries work as normal.
As a last resort you could try downloading MCpatcher and press the 'Test' button, hopefully it'll work, but it's not a perfect solution.
