Okay so while playing Minecraft my computer will randomly shut off...like completly. (Not monitor just the main computer) When I turn it back on it doesn't even say an unexpected shutdown happened lol.
This happens entirely randomly. Could happen 30 minutes into Minecraft (Seems to be the quickest it has happened) to an hour and a half into playing Minecraft. Now my computer didnt over heat it is at its normal heat.
I can do anything else on the computer for hours and hours including other games but this never happens ONLY when I am playing Minecraft. So what the hell how do I fix this?
Also I noticed this only happened back when I 1st updated to 1.3.2 prior to that it never happened and with 1.4.2 it still does this.
I thought after lookng this up some people said Minecraft takes alot of Ram but I have 8 GB of ram...wayyy more then enough for Minecraft.
I know you guys ask for computer stats to help narrow the problem but I dont know everything you need to know. Here is what I do know.
Gateway computer
Windows 7
Ram 8 GB.
64 Bit
ATI Radeon HD 4600 (I think thats the graphics card name? If not I dont know what that is lol)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz (4 CPU's), ~ 2.5GHz
Thats all the stat stuff I can find lol. If you need more info tell me what and how to find it lol.
Anyway please tell me what the problem is and how the hell to fix it. So freaking annoying lol.
It only happened to me once and the logical conclusion is your CPU got too hot and shutdown the computer. Maybe you should put some new thermal paste on it assuming you know how and have thermal paste.
That is your graphics card's name, I wouldn't assume it's related but who knows; it could have been hot as well but it shouldn't have been.
I know you said it didn't overheat but I didn't think mine did either. Still don't know what caused it but heat is the most obvious culprit.
But why would this not have happened before 1.3.2?
After the last time it shut down my computer I left it off for 15 minutes. Then turned it back on and started Minecraft again....20 minutes later shuts down again. No way in 20 minutes Minecraft could make the computer over heat. Is there so much more stuff in Minecraft 1.3.2-1.4.2 that makes the computer heat up faster or something? Cause putting my hand on it there is no warmth its just average. I could leave my computer on for a week just sitting at the desktop and it would never shut down randomly.
I just have a feeling something in Minecraft makes my computer go AHHH IT MIGHT BE A VIRUS EMERGENCY SHUT DOWN!!! Even though there is nothing for it to get freaked out about lol. Thats my idea anyway.
Nah, it's likely heat. 1.3.2 and furthermore I would assume 1.4 are fairly sloppy in the coding department (not that I could do a whole lot better). You're not directly touching your CPU though, you're touching the stack. In order for the stack to be hot the CPU will have to be smoking hot; not something you want. Java may not be the best language for a game the size and scope of Minecraft and I know people with similar issues who have much nicer computers than I have.
I wouldn't see any anti virus forcing a system shutdown if it thought it was an issue. Closing the game perhaps but not a total shutdown. I saw this issue quite a few times when I did tech support for Minecraft and it's almost certainly a heat issue. How long have you had the computer? The thermal paste should really be changed once a year but it rarely is.
If it was a RAM issue it would say as much or pop an error report and close. If it was a graphic error it would also pop an error report and close. The only other thing it could be by process of elimination is overheating. I can't tell you why some people have this issue and others don't. My computer is worse than yours is and while I do have a bad fps it doesn't turn itself off due to heat aside from that one time.
My suggestion would be turn off the smooth lighting and turn the render distance to normal or even small. Then play the crap out of it and see if it still does it. Just as a test to see if that has anything to do with it. Let me know if that helps at all.

Like everyone else said, sudden shut offs are a sign of emergency thermal shutdown.
Leaving the computer off for 15minutes is not enough time for the chip that overheated to cool off, that's why it only took 20 minutes to overheat again.
As for what changed with 1.3, do you know that if you went back to an earlier version it wouldn't overheat now? because time has passed, and it may just be a coincidence that it started around that time. But it could be from the update, MC went from basically being single threaded, to dual threaded, so you can use more CPU and more GPU now with MC 1.3+

Oh yah I changed those 2 settings you talked about. Render Distance is Normal now. And Smooth Lighting is off. But this BS still happens.
