I am having a problem with my sound on my Minecraft 1.4.2 Client. My Sound was fine up until I updated to 1.4. I have a video to show my problem here --->
Please Help.
Ok. Maybe I was just having a bit of fun there.
Try deleting \.minecraft\resources\ folder.
Launch minecraft and let it download the sound files again.
Oh never mind, turns out it works after all, forget what I said! Sorry to those of you who are experiencing technical difficulties, I wish thee luck in sorting all this out!
If you reset the sound system everything should be fine, however no new versions of the sounds will be downloaded, only pre-existing sounds, which incidentally mean that all custom sounds will be included.
Anyway, to manually reset the sound system , press shift + F5, almost immediately your audio will begin to play again, if not, then redownload minecraft. If its not playing after a reset your sound files are missing, corrupt or there is something interfiering with java.

Try replacing the file CodecJOrbis.class with the same file from the 1.3.2 jar. It's located in your minecraft.jar file, at paulscode/sounds/codecs. I had that problem, and by replacing that file, it worked! A prerelease before 12w38b should work as the old jar as well. You should rename the jars as zips, decompress, then copy the file from the old jar to the new jar in to same directory, replacing the newer one. Rename it back to a jar, don't recompress. For some reason, the codec does not work well with the system. Perhaps it is because of the structure of the PPC processor, and the way it reads data. I too have a Mac PPC G4, with 10.4.11. Has anyone submitted a bug report?
As for other solutions, updating LWJGL doesn't work. 2.8.4 crashes me, 2.7.1 doesn't fix it. The resources play fine manually. I haven't tried plug-in speakers or headphones, but I doubt it will work either. In the game, you have barely hear some resemblance to the sounds. The codec fails to convert the data into a useable, recognizable form for the system. I feel that this only occurs on PPC Macs, all the other ones are probably irrelevant.
I think that the issue you guys are all facing here is sound lag.
Thankfully, there's a really great Mod which can help to resolve this problem.

Retired StaffGo into the \minecraft\bin\natives\
folder.
Delete the 2 OpenAL files. (OpenAL32 & OpenAL64)Looks like the mac might only have one openal file called: openal.dylib
Launch minecraft, see if sound works after that.
If it's still doing the same thing, try updating to the latest LWJGL. (version 2.8.4)

Beyond that. I'm out of Ideas for MAC.
