Every time I try to connect, it says "connection timed out: connect". I have legal Minecraft 1.4.2. It is the latest server file and it is my own server.
I don't know, I am using the IP I gave to my friends. It used to work, but now it does not. I also do not use localhost because it never worked for me.
The IP your friends use is almost certainly not the one that you should use.
You are on the inside of your router / NAT box, and they are on the outside. The addresses change as they cross that box.
If you have not configured your server IP address in the server properties, and you are running the server on the same PC as your client, then localhost should work.
If you have configured a server IP address, and that is actually working for you, then you should connect to that address.
If your server is on a different machine then you need to figure out what that machine's IP address is and use that.

It is on my computer, and I took the IP from Hamachi.
then you need to use your hamachi ip, witout the port..
i nice hint might be opening a port in your router...
that means hamachi is not needed and you can then use your external ip to make a dynamic name, like guitarmen.zapto.org (easyer to remember)
I know, but I am a lazy person. I used the IP without the port, it worked. But if I include a custom world it doesn't work again.
