Deleted all traces of Minecraft after my mcpatcher decided to foul up (so I went for a fresh install), but when I downloaded it again, it locks up about 90% of the way into downloading the .jar file. I've seen and posted in a few other threads but haven't received a response, so I figured I'd make a new thread I can keep track of. Someone said "disable avg and firewall" --- been there, done that, no change. I can't change AVG now, because the trial expired and I'd have to buy it to change any settings currently active on my computer.
Someone else said check the "hosts" file; mine's completely blank. Is there something that should be there?
In any event, I can't download the files, it locks up with a big "failed to launch" at the top of the screen.

Edit: I think I see stuff related to textures but I have no texture packs other than the default installed.
Have you used MCpatcher to install mods then? (it seems that mcpatcher did something that minecraft isn't happy about)
I'd suggest deleting your /.minecraft/bin/ folder then running the launcher again.
Deleting just the bin folder will leave your saves and server list intact, but will have minecraft replace all the core files and libraries used by the game.
Looks like the problem was mcpatcher. I saw in other threads that unpatching, then repatching works. I gave it a shot and it did. Thanks for your troubleshooting, it's appreciated.

EDIT: I downloaded the pre-release. Now it's nothing but a solid black screen.
