I have the same problem, Whyrange. (error occurred: Software caused connection abort: recv failed)
I have had this same error since the pre-release of 1.3 and I have done these basic things to try solving this error:
-Re-install Java and Minecraft
-Check and change firewall settings & turning it off all together
-Update drivers
-Plugging into the router or going wireless (neither makes a difference)
****None of this has helped
I can't even connect to my OWN server!
I have searched for several hours through the dozens of posts all over the web about this issue and there is no clear solution.
it isn't my internet. It isn't my firewall. Or my software. Or my settings.
There HAS to be a singular solution to this! Why hasn't Mojang acknowledged this MASSIVE error that's existed since the Beta release?
(First world problems, I know, but come on! I paid money for this. I'd like it to function as advertised.)

What OS are you guys running?
Also when you say you reinstalled, did you do a force update or an actual reinstall. Here is the reinstall method I suggest in case you didn't do it this way. Rename your .minecraft folder to something like .minecraft_old. Go to minecraft.net and download the latest launcher there and use it to download a fresh copy of the game. This method has helped several people with odd problems.
If you're running Win7 you might try right clicking the launcher and telling it to run as administrator. At least that way it will avoid some odd permissions based time outs.
If you're running a 64bit OS then make absolutely sure you have the 64bit version of Java JRE installed.
@ Early_Cuyler, You mention "Plugging into the router or going wireless", not sure what you mean by that. If you have both a modem and a network router, try bypassing the router and plugging directly into the modem. If that works then you need to open up your network a little by creating exception rules or opening ports that it may be blocking that minecraft needs.

I re-installed minecraft and Java and updated all possible drivers. Is there anything else to do?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
