After I updated to 1.4.2, many of the sounds stopped working. I can hear footsteps and some blocks break, but I can't hear anything else. What can I do to fix it?
Delete your resources folder in %appdata%\.minecraft\ Then go into a world and press F3 and S at the same time. That should redownload your sounds for you, though it might take quite awhile. Go into your resources folder once in a while and check whether the new sounds are finished downloading, then restart minecraft and check the sounds. It worked for me
