Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers.

Actually I have this same problem, and have had for a long time, I used a workaround to get past it previously, however it's no longer working since the latest update (1.4.2 ).
It's easy to say 'get the latest drivers', however I have the latest drivers, which supposedly support OpenGL.
The graphics chipset in question is the Intel series 4 express, yes it's a laptop, but there is a known bug with this chipset and lwjgl, and the previous solution of renaming the minecraft.exe to minecraft.jar and using a batch file no longer works.
This is due to the latest update, which uses an incompatible version of lwjgl, nothing to do with needing new drivers.
For the OP, I'm working on this, and hope to have a solution to this, but if you are using an Intel chipset it may not be an easy fix.
(And not everyone has the resources to upgrade or replace hardware at will).
Still working on this, I am able to get it working using MCPatcher 'test' mode, and making a batch file using the MCPatcher test parameters works, but this method skips login, it's like playing in demo mode, with the 'steve' skin, and achievements are reset every time, so it's not really a perfect solution.
