I was attempting to make a quick 2 black tall 1 block wide underground passage between two spots and upon starting my game to continue my tunnel has gone dark as if my torches have been knocked out and I start losing hearts immediately as if being attacked. I cannot move or place blocks. This has happened in tunnels before but I was somehow able to move and then it righted it's self.
Do you mean in the future (after I allow myself to die and start at my last spawn point) or make it 2x2 right away? After playing around with it a little I've discovered I can't turn or look around. I can use tools but unfortunately I don't have a pickaxe so I'm unable to quickly destroy any blocks since I'm stuck in the tunnel. There wouldn't be enough time to place my crafting table and build one anyway even I was able to place blocks.. My hearts run out too quickly. In order to replenish them I quit the game, launch it and then pause it the moment it starts and exit. For some reason that causes 2-3 hearts to replenish. I do that 3 or 4 times in a row and all my hearts are filled again. If I try to use tools they deplete quicker, if I remain on my basic crafting/inventory screen they also deplete faster.
I'm starting to think that letting myself die and starting at my last spawn point with the lesson learned is all I can do.
I googled "stuck in in block" and while it didn't reveal much to me I launched my game and used my shovel to start chipping away at a block with the hope that it might break a block in time and unstick me. It did. All is well. I guess I know now that when I call it day and I'm in a tunnel I have to make a small cavern for myself to avoid getting stuck again.
May be you're not getting back your hearts, it just don't save the fact your losing them.
I also think that you glitched in a block (causing you tu suffocate). May be your position was saved, but not the terrain, and that's why you're in stones you previously destroyed.
You can use MCEdit to place you anywhere you want, like safely back home
