I created a custom skin and uploaded it to use, and have been happily playing for months since. No problems whatsoever.
More recently, however, I have found that I will sometimes log in and have Steve's skin again. I've been hearing about lots of problems with this recently, apparently associated with server load, but that seems like it would have more to do with me updating my skin to something new. I haven't. It should have stayed the same from the server's perspective (other than me having to re-upload it) since I first set it.
Sometimes, I log in as Steve, close Minecraft, re-upload my skin, re-open Minecraft, and I'm back to playing as my normal skin. Sometimes it doesn't happen right away and I have to close Minecraft and do something else for a few minutes. But sometimes, I never get my skin back, and end up trying to re-upload again, which I'm sure resets the process (but often speeds it up!).
I only really started having this problem since applying the mcpatcher program and trying to use some HD texture packs (which I have now disabled, on account of being unable to change my skin conventionally... I really like my skin!); that's the closest thing I've made to a modification to Minecraft. Anything else I can do or is this just a server thing? It seems odd that I'd have trouble without having tried to update or change my skin.
