Compass changing spawn direction?

I recently went exploring away from spawn, with a compass. After about half an hour of walking around areas, I decided to head back. When I noticed my compass I pointed across an ocean, I built a boat and tried to cross it. THIS is where it gets weird: My compass was directing me to a point in the ocean, right off shore and about 200 blocks from my original spawn(I have a stack of cobble marking it). Is there any reason for it to do this? Am I the only one with this problem?

Did your compass point to the right place before you went exploring?
Have you ever replaced your level.dat?
