When I choose 'force update' and then login I get the following error message: Failed to launch, fatal error occured (4): null retrieving: minecraft.jar 92% @ 738.76 kb/sec. Any help would be appreciated...thank you.
I believe this is caused by a Anti - Virus program blocking the download.
Try disabling (temporarily) your AV.
If you use AVG it's the link scanner portion that regularly messes with minecraft downloads.
I've heard McAfee can cause problems aswell.
ZoneAlarm (firewall) also caused problems for me with Minecraft when I used it.
Avast (what I use) has no issues that I've run across
