I recently installed a x512 texture pack (r3d craft) and have only been getting 20 - 30 FPS. Also it looks rather 'skippy' when I look around. Normally, I wouldn't be concerned, but I have some pretty powerful hardware, and was just wondering if this was typical, or if there was anything that could be done to fix it. I've increased Minecraft's RAM to 6gb, of which it uses about 4, but it doesn't seem to make high utilization of my graphics card or my CPU. Also, my video drivers are up to date.
I have an AMD fx8120 @ 4.5 GHZ
16gb ddr3 ram @ 1866
and an amd 7970 @ 1100
When you start getting into the 128+ texturepacks, it starts becoming less of a computer issue and more of a Java limitation. Try to make sure java is up to date and all old versions of it are disabled or uninstalled. If the problem still persists, install optifine which will allow minecraft to utilize multiple cores amongst many other things. optifine can also make minecraft look a lot better with anti-aliasing and much more.
