Another massive wipe-out, which (if I hadn't backed up the building and learned MCEdit) would have cost me many many hours of effort.
Background of my world: 90% of it was built post-Anvil, but some of it was pre-Anvil. This section may or may not have been pre-Anvil, I don't recall. I am only playing single player survival mode. The only mod I use is Optifine, but these problems occurred prior to every using it, and occur when I am NOT using it, so that's not the problem. Usually happens with the default texture pack; I only just recently started using a texture pack (R3dcraft shown here) but it's irrelevant to the problem.
I am not having any other computer problems, disk is defragmented, no disk errors, and I get decent FPS without lag spikes.
I do use a third party app to backup -- not a mod, but an external app that resides outside of MC. But I do not RUN from the backups, so that can't be the problem.
This time it's the same area of the map as my last "apocalypse"... probably the same chunk. But the "damage" is different, goes higher, and different blocks were affected.
I think that's important. The affected blocks are HIGHER, which is weird, since a "chunk" goes all the way to the top, doesn't it?
Unlike the old-style "chunk error" in which an entire chunk was simply replaced by air, this affects random blocks within the chunk. I am assuming it is within a chunk, although it might be more than one.. the damage is spread, so it's difficult to determine the full perimeter.
What's also interesting to note is that damaged blocks were not replaced with air, resulting in floating water, but instead the water flowed into the damaged areas. notice the flowing water inside the house, where there had been a small rectangular pool previously. This is unlike the normal chunk error, it's like a bomb went off.
(This is single player, so not the work of any third party.)
Could this be FIRE? The thing is, there's no fireplace or active fire in the building. You can see a small lava trap, but that doesn't seem to be the source of the problem, and it's lined on sides and below by stone.
Lightning doesn't cause problems like this.
Because this is the 2nd time this particular area was affected, I am guessing the level.dat file is corrupted somehow. I have already run MCEdit's repair region function, and that has had no effect. I am thinking of using MCEdit to restore the building (from an old backup) but placing it in a different area to see if that's the problem. I'd hate to have to rebuild a massive tower from scratch, but it's looking like that's what I have to do.
Another factor: I have a Nether portal nearby... probably about 10 - 15 chunks away. A previous chunk wipeout affected an entirely different part of my map, but that was also somewhat near a Nether portal (that one about 50 chunks away, I'd guess.) Those are the only portals I have.
I'd like some thoughtful, knowledgeable replies, please. I'd ask the moderators and other Mojang apologists to refrain from the usual canned responses ("Never happened to me, must be your system.", "all programs are affected by data integrity issues", "you have no right to complain, you paid for it.", and the god-awful "update your drivers", etc.) If you don't have an idea for a solution, then just move onto a topic where you can contribute something positive.
In the mean time, I yet again ask Mojang to get a handle on this problem, as it affects the very CORE FUNCTIONALITY of what the game is supposed to do.
