When I try to play Minecraft I can play for a few seconds then it lags out and locks up. I got a Java error on my desktop the first time it happened.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. I have the newest version of Java. I have an NVidia GEForce 9500 graphics card with the latest drivers, 8gb of RAM, and an AMD FX-4100 quad core processor. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall both Java and Minecraft 3 times now. I also got rid of all old versions of Java. I have looked all over for a solution and can't find a straight answer. Any help would be appreciated.
