Recently, I began a new world next to a NPC village. I started up quite a large and impressive sheep farm as well as a wheat farm to get all the emeralds I could grab. Within about 2 days (real days) after selling mass amounts of wool and wheat, my a few of my NPC's started to go missing. I thought maybe it was an issue with their housing so I built 6 more of the 5 block by 5 block homes hoping they would stop despawning and live in the new homes. Of course they didn't and started disappearing more and more.
I'm currently down to about 3 - 4 villagers, all of which won't buy the items I sell.
Does anyone else have this same issue or know how to solve this?
Villagers have a habit of running away from the village and getting killed by zombies. I've made tons of artificial villages and there has always been villagers jumping off cliffs or running about 50 blocks away from the village.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
