Hi! I haven't played Minecraft in roughly 9-10 months, but my IGN is Dave1004 (I purchased Minecraft in early alpha).
I have a few questions, and if you guys could answer any, I'd be really appreciative! Thanks!
1) Why is there lag in my game? I'm playing the offline single-player mode (My desktop doesn't have internet), but whenever I hit mobs, or sometimes mine a block, there's a bit of "Lag"...E.G: The block will reappear, then disappear again, or the mobs will bounce back and forth. It's almost like lag on Multiplayer servers, but this is on singleplayer? It's extremely irritating! If you could help, I'd appreciate it! (It's not my computer, I have a very up-to-date desktop that plays virtually any game smoothly. I even turned all graphics settings to the lowest, but still no-go!)
2) Why does so much data transmit during minecraft multiplayer/just sitting on the starting screen of Minecraft (Where you select singleplayer/multiplayer/etc). I have an internet limited to 10 gb/month, so I often monitor my internet. Now, the weird thing is that it's constantly transmitting roughly 200 kb/s of data! Even when I'm not connected to a server! Why is this? Not even ten minutes had passed, and I somehow spent almost 60mb! Is it impossible for me to play Multiplayer this way?
3) LAN. If I buy another Minecraft account, and install the game on our second laptop, can I play Multi-Player with my sister? Do we need internet for that, or can it be done off-line, using the same router?
Thanks for reading! I really appreciate it. Good luck to you, and may the diamonds ever be in your favor!
1) In game you can press F3 and it will bring up a little debug screen that shows your fps. First off id just check that and it will say something about memory in the top right. If you find youre using 100% of you allocated memory that could be causing the lag and in which case you will need to give java more RAM.
BTW that is most easily done by making a custom batch file to start minecraft you can find out how to do that on the forums.
Secondly for this problem your java may not match your windows. If you are running 32 bit windows you need to make sure you have 32 bit java and like wise 64 bit for 64 bit. If this is the case uninstall java and get yourself the right one.
If thats not the case then im not sure since you say you have good specs.
2) not my area of knowledge
3) yes you can play Lan like that one of you will need to have the server running off your computer though. If you cant get that to work it can most easily be done through the internet using a program called logmein hamtchii. It give you each an ip and allow you to connect over the web. I use this to host servers for me in my friends.
I hope this helps a bit but i only know basics to help you out.

Well, my FPS is at a steady 220 to 340, that's on normal viewing distance/everything else maxed out. (Can't do Far, says I need a 64bit...) I don't know what else to do, then. Thanks though! I also do have 32 bit, with 32 bit Java. I played Skyrim on High just before this, never encountered a single bit of lag.

Alright, I'll check out that "Logmein hamtchii". Thanks! I'd love to LAN.
If anybody has any answers towards question #2 or anything else, I'll gladly take them! Thanks!
1. The lag is part of the multiplayer single player merge. It happens to all players so there's nothing to worry about.
If you have a 64 bit windows though like said above install 64 bit java then you can safely use far render.
2. A 10 GB Internet limit a month is rather small. The best I can suggest is to get a better Internet provider. You're also better off asking somebody else rather than me, you can try the computer section forum.
3. Yes but you have to make sure firewall allows other connections or it doesn't work.

Arrival of Darkness, Darker yet recognizable textures.

That's really stupid. I don't USE multiplayer. I never will. Is there any mods or ways to fix this? What an atrocious update...In my humble opinion. Thanks for informing me though! (Don't mean to sound like a troll, sorry if I do, but that is REALLY silly. Really dang silly.)

Hm. Well, I'll check out the computer section. And believe me, if there was a better choice, I would get it. Satellite internet is all that I can get where I live, but that's fine. I don't download much, or play multiplayer games.
1. As other people have said, it's the SMP merge. This isn't inherently a bad thing, it all depends on your computer specs, a lot of people run the game without ever seeing these issues, but other people with weaker specs have been having trouble lately.
2. It's probably those Snooper Settings, I've heard once before about them overtaxing internet connections. This is another issue that I do not have.
3. Yes indeedy, and you only need internet for the logging in phase, not for playing on the same LAN server. As long as your router actually has LAN functionality of course.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
In 1.3.1 they added something called Snooper. It is a feature that sends data from your computer to mojang so they can study it. I don't know if it's that or not because I don't really think it would be sending 200kb/s.
In case, you can turn it off by going too Options > Snooper Settings > Allow Snooper (click for off).
I noticed that! I'll turn it off, and check out if it works when I can. Thanks, that might be it!
1: Minecraft has been updated to run a LAN server on the computer in singleplayer (Personally, I hate it, who the hell uses LAN?) so your computer has to compensate for that running in the background too. Instead of an FPS drop like you used to see before 1.3, you could possibly see "lag spikes" like in multiplayer.
2: I wouldn't be able to give a definitive answer to that... Maybe because of all the new stuff they added in, it might require constant data uploading/downloading. Not my area of expertise, so don't take my word.
3: I would say yes, considering it isn't really downloading anything from the internet, considering it's a LAN network, but don't take my word for it. I'm pretty sure, but not entirely.
Hm. Well, I like LAN, because there's nothing more fun than a get-together with beer, pizza, a dozen friends and Warcraft 3 or Starcraft. We did it a lot in the older days. Thanks for replying!
Watch out though if you cant get your LAN to work the normal way by attaching the computers through cable or wireless....Hamachii does use internet
Hm, alright, I'll see what I can do. My plan was to have the desktop and laptop both running Minecraft, so me and my sister can play together. Thanks for the warning though!

It's weird. My uncle built my desktop two years ago, cost about $800. I checked on Canyourun it, and everything from Skyrim to Crysis 1/2 to Dragon Age will run flawlessly. (As Skyrim does, without lag on "High", or whatever it was auto-set to.) The SMP "Merge" is stupid for people who only play singleplayer, but, eh. Maybe there's a mod to fix it. I'll definitely make sure to check that "Snooper" thing now, too! Dang snoopin' thing.
I believe the router does, and I have two very long cables to connect to the desktop/laptop. It should work for LAN then!
------------------------------------- Thanks for the replies everyone! I have all the information I need now. I really appreciate the help! May the skies rain Slime Balls and diamonds on you!

So, is that a yes to "Playing without internet", or is that sort of thing impossible? And, cool, thank you!

Hoh. Well, Minecraft LAN time! And that does suck a giant's ass. Stupid giants, eh, mate?
