Sounds like you have a fancy computer. I had an issue like this when I got a new PC: It has a powerful discrete graphics for games and a terrible integrated chip for rendering basic low-power graphics only. However, Minecraft was still using the low-power chip. I fixed this in the nvidia configuration panel. Do you have both ddiscrete and integrated graphics? This might be the issue. If you have nvidia, I can show you how to fix it.
On a computer with integrated graphics card, reducing memory allocated to Minecraft will improve graphics performance because the graphics and CPU share the same memory.
I have this EXACT same problem! I was just coming on here to post about it when I saw this. I have a custom gaming computer and I have been able to run Minecraft perfectly before with 200+ fps. Now I can play for 2 minutes and I start getting major lag. I also noticed that the game render part says something like 99.55% which looks abnormally high. I hope someone can answer this correctly. Maybe it's just a glitch with this new update?
Well since multiple people have this glitch, I assume it's either your hardware in your computer configured wrong (most likely your GPU or RAM) or just a glitch/bug in the game causing compatibility with your system not to work properly. If it's option #2, best thing to do is to keep posting on the forums, look for help on Google, or try contacting Mojang. Otherwise, they'll probably fix it soon, IF, it is a bug.

Game will run fine for 5 min. before FPS drops to 0-2. INCLUSIVE (I didn't think 0FPS was even possible, so I assume it just rounds).
Please help me before I stab Notch with a baseball bat.
NOTE:The pie chart says that "Gamerenderer" is using 99.99% of whatever when this occurs.
also it probably is a ram issue try a program like cleanmem
