My friend recently upgraded his video card from some form of Radeon 9800 (SE?) to a GeForce 6200 512MB. Both cards were AGP_8X, and I did the installation for him so it was seated properly, etc., I upgrade hardware all the time. Anyway, he is complaining of random system hangs while playing Minecraft - at first he thought it was only in full screen mode, but apparently it is not tied to that. I've seen it happen, the game freezes on a single frame, while the hard drive continues to make noise, and the entire system is unresponsive and must be shut down manually.
He's running WinXP and while the hard drive is loud during R/W operations, its SMART values suggest that all is okay.
Since this is only happening after installing the new video card, what can we do to troubleshoot? The card was brand new ordered from Newegg and we can't test much else in 3D because Minecraft is the only game we run on that PC. The nVidia drivers are the latest available, were installed less than a week ago.
Has anyone else had similar problems with a 6200 AGP and the latest drivers? if I should downgrade them, to which version?
(Also, I will run memtest86+ next time I go over there just to check.)
