I went to Mojang.com to download the client version of snapshot 12w38a. When I clicked on my downloads window, it showed my newly downloaded client as "minecraft(1).jar". So I did what I did last time when getting my first snapshot ever (12w37a) and dragged it into my bin folder expecting a notice to pop up asking me if I wanted to replace my last one, but it didn't, and the "minecraft(1).jar" file just sat under a file called "version" with the minecraft.jar for 12w37a (which is just named as "minecraft" instead of "minecraft.jar") on top of it. I tried deleting the minecraft.jar for 12w37a so that minecraft(1).jar would replace it, but when I went to start up Minecraft, it just said "Done loading." with the green bar at about 90% full and not moving. That's as far as it got and it never progressed. So I went through the recycle bin to find my 12w37a .jar file and put it back into the bin folder with minecraft(1).jar, and when I started up Minecraft again, it said I was playing in 12w37a. I've tried everything from renaming minecraft(1).jar to "minecraft.jar" and "minecraft" but it still didn't work. Now I've asked this question somewhere else and someone told me to "force update" my game. Can someone tell me if:
1: He was right about force updating my game?
2: If he was right, how do I force update it?
3: If I force update it will it delete any worlds or saves?
4: If he's wrong, can you please tell me what I need to do to fix this problem?
(P.S. I'm a complete noob when it comes to this. As I stated before, I've only ever had one other snapshot, so is it just a newbie mistake I'm making?)
Wow, okay. Yeah, the first problem was absolutely that the name of the file was wrong; you did need to remove the "(1)" from the name, because the game needs to be able to find the minecraft.jar directory. I'm pretty sure removing the ".jar" from its name is moot, but I could be mistaken on that.
If you find that the bin folder has a minecraft.jar file (just one) and you still can't get it to work, forcing an update is a good way to reset. That or deleting everything and reinstalling it (probably wanna pull your saved game folder out of there if you do). Forcing an update is an option when you first open the Minecraft.exe, in the Setup button above the Login one. That's really all that the Setup is for, basically. Just click the weirdly long Force an Update button, and when you log in it should write you a new .jar and work properly in the latest official update. Then start over; delete the minecraft.jar and put in the snapshot one with the exact same name as the one that was removed.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.

I should be ashamed of myself. All I had to do was force update it and then rename it "minecraft". Thank you so much for the help.
