I know I'm not the only one who has gotten the Minecraft "black screen of death" when attempting to load Minecraft. I've had this problem ever since I bought Minecraft a year and a half ago, for this computer in particular. The problem seemed hopeless, and I've been reluctantly using my laptop instead.
I revisited this problem last night, and attempted to instead load Minecraft in 256-color mode. This time, instead of getting the usual black screen, I got this error:

I am using Windows XP, have my display settings at 32bit and the latest version of Java 32. I'm using a Radeon video card that's about six years old, and my drivers are all up-to-date.
Now, on a second look at the error, I notice "Insufficient color precision", so perhaps that just means that I can't run the game in 256 colors. But running it normally just gives me a black screen with no error.
Does OpenGL vs. Direct3D matter? Could it be a driver specifics problem?
I almost feel like I'm getting closer to narrowing down what exactly the issue is, but right now I'm stuck.
It's likely a driver issue, which radeon card are you using? But it could be more then that. Minecraft ever since Beta 1.7.3 required opengl 1.3 support at minimum. So if you card doesn't support atleast that version of opengl that could be causing the problem. However I can't say i've run across any radeon cards that didn't have opengl support. Just users that haven't installed the drivers from the amd site.
If you don't know what card you have or where to find the drivers on the amd site. Post a dxdiag report and someone here can help you out.
If you don't know how to do that, or still have issues please also post a dxdiag report:
To obtain the DxDiag file:
Press the Windows Key (the key with the Windows logo on your keyboard) + R (at the same time).
Type in DxDiag and press Enter or click OK. This will open the DirectX diagnostic tool.
Click on the Save All Information Button
Save this file to your Windows desktop and name it dxdiag.
