My nephews spread the Minecraft bug to my son, so I've been investigating the game so I can help him enjoy it. We watched 4 or 5 intro videos and were excited to try it. I tried the demo, but it wasn't working for me. I could walk around, but I could not break any blocks. I was already pretty much decided to buy the game, so I paid the money and ran the launcher.
Now I have paid money, but the game still will not work.
1. All "randomly created " worlds come up the same as the demo world on the intro screen at the homepage of Minecraft.net, the forest with blocks of coal stacked throughout. This also happens if I just guess a seed. This happens to both Creative and Survival modes. I haven't tried Hardcore. I looked up a few seeds on forum threads, and those work to generate something different, but I hate being stuck with that world. Is the fact I didn't play more than a few minutes of the demo affecting my generator somehow?
2. I can't break blocks on survival mode. Well, I can't break wood, earth, or stone. I can knock down tree leaves and grass clumps. This is true whether stuck in that demo world or with another seed. This is not a patience thing--I watched the intro videos and it takes a few seconds to chop a piece of wood with your hand. I have literally sat for 5 minutes straight clicking on a tree trunk section and nothing happens. The flakes fly off, but the body of the block does not change. Creative appears to work fine; I am able to break everything in one hit and place blocks. But we want to try Survival and craft things.
I found threads here through Google, and they talked about being in Adventure Mode or being too close to the staging point or just restarting. I have had the same problem on 3 different days over 2 weeks, restarting didn't fix it. It's not from being too close to the staging point. Being in Adventure Mode sounds like my problem, but I can't figure out how to change it if that is the case. My options when generating the world are Creative, Survival, and Hardcore--no Adventure option. I saw a thread with a prompt you can pull up and try to change the Game Mode to the right number, but when I tried it the game just said I didn't have authority to issue that command.
Thank you for the quick response! The payment went through fine I think, but alas, something is still not working correctly. I forced the update a couple times, but it didn't seem to do anything. I didn't notice any extra time loading or anything. I still can't break blocks and am seeding to the Demo world.
I made a new world and figured out how to enable the "cheats" so I could switch Game Modes. I used the /gamemode command to switch back and forth a couple of times. The Creative mode works fine and the Adventure wouldn't let me break anything or even knock chips off of wood. But the Survival mode still lets me hack away at a trunk or sand indefinitely, shooting chips, but not breaking.
Also, I noticed now that the three different user accounts on my Windows XP can access Minecraft, but they all have different worlds even though I'm using the same log-in info. Would that affect anything or be a symptom of anything? But all three have the same problem, so maybe not. The Demo world still exists on one user's account. Should I do something to that? Delete and reinstall whole thing? Can I do that now that I've paid?
Because there are multiple user accounts on your Windows PC, All world info, doesnt matter what account, will be separate. The world data is saved on that Windows Account, not Minecraft Account.
To solve your problem, I would suggest deleting the game and redownloading using your new premium account.

Any help? Am I missing something obvious?
