When I start the minecraft.jar client on a linux computer (i.e., java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp Downloads/minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame), I don't get the choice to select a multiplayer game as the documentation states. Instead, I have a window with news and a login frame. Do I need some alternative command line option(s)?
If it's not getting past the done loading, it's hanging up on an error. I don't know enough about linux to help you with that. (I stab at a video driver issue, most common problem in that spot for windows users.)
All I can tell you is that single player, multi-player is on the next screen. Checking to see if any of the Guru's that know nix better are around, I'll point them this way if they are.
Thanks, that fixed the hang problem. But what I was hoping for was to be able to connect to my own server. That is, the server instructions say that there should be a page which lets me select the "Multiplayer" option (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Setting_up_a_server#Configure_and_connect). Do I need to use an unofficial client?

Retired StaffNot as far as I can see -- it says "User not premium". If I click on demo, it says "Updating Minecraft" and "Done loading" but hangs there.
