Today, I got my new laptop.
It's a Toshiba Qosmio X775
Processor: Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz
RAM: 8GB
System type: 64-bit
OS: Windows 7
I first downloaded minecraft, then Java. I was very annoyed to find that when I tried to open Minecraft, I got a message saying "Error: Could not create Java Virtual Machine."
I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling MANY different types of Java (Java SE 7, JDK7, Java SE 6, JRE7). Nothing worked. I tried turning off my firewall and downloading java. Still didn't work. I tried creating and running the .bat files. That didn't work.
I should mention that while installing java, right as the installation is about to be completed, I actually get the "Error: Could not create Java Virtual Machine" message WHILE TRYING TO INSTALL JAVA. This really confused me. I'm starting to think that my computer is incapable of running java. I have no clue what the problem is.
I am seriously running out of options here. I'm beginning to think that it is my computer that is causing the problems. I can't figure this problem out. Are there any suggestions at all? Please help.

Retired StaffRemove any installations of java that are listed already.
Shut down the computer. Leave it off for a few seconds. Power it back up.
Download java from this location: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Make sure you get the 64-bit version.
Try installing that copy of java.
