I created the .bat file and put it with the launcher folder like the official site said, but the .bat doesn't actually open. It opens a cmd thing for about half a second then disappears, so I tried to just use the launcher to play but it's still doing it.

Yeah common bug for a bad bat file. make sure to use the exact name of the file you're tying to open.
if you failed doing that then try this
go to control panel/in the search box type "adv" and you should see system settings right? below you see something called view advanced system settings go there/in that box go to environment variables/in the first box click new/variable name: _JAVA_OPTIONS/variable value: -Xmx2g -Xms2g if you need more then type 3g 3g , etc etc etc
that should give every java app that runs to the exact amount you put example if you open minecraft it will automaticly assign 2gb and you don;t have to use the bat file never
and if you run a server it will automaticly assign 2gb without the use of the bat file
use this at your own risk this is for advanced users only
