I'm trying to downgrade minecraft back to 1.2.5 but I get an error

That error is probably due to a 'bad' option in .minecraft/options.txt language is one that can cause this, simple thing is to rename the file (to keep your options), and then let minecraft generate a new default options.txt.
You went backwards in versions. Options from a newer release that 1.2.5 does not understand (or option selections) can cause this problem.
Mojang should make the option processing more tolerant of things it doesn't understand and just ignore / reset those items to the default.
