I am trying to help my son. He started using Minecraft on his iPod and he and his sister LOVE it. He got a new laptop and wanted to download it there. He isn't experienced enough to do his own downloads and aparently I am not either. The first attempt ended up crashing his Windows StartUp. I have tried to research the internet, but I am not techie at all. After installing and reinstalling things were going well, but he wanted Tekkit. I tried to download that and the game quit working. I ended up having to roll back his computer entirely to prior to the tekkit install. Unfortunately now, every time we open Minecraft in Firefox it crashes Firefox. Same problem in Explorer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled again. Playing in the Web just gives us a blank screen. I tried the stand alone download, but it never installs any icons on the start bar, home page or in programs. I shut it off and now it is gone. He LOVES this game. I really want to help him do what he wants on this, but am completely at a loss. I can't even figure out how to make the support chat work. If there is anyone that can help us I would be very grateful!
The stand alone download doesn't install anything into the start bar, or programs. It's best to save the file you download (minecraft.exe) onto the desktop. Launch it from there when you want to play or you can drag the icon to the start menu and add it there yourself manually, you will still need to leave it on the desktop as well.
I agree, Another good idea is to get magiclauncher. It lets you install mods much easier if that is what your son preferred. But, do get the client, and try force updating (OPTIONS, FORCEUPDATE) in the opening window (CLIENT DOWNLOAD ONLY)
