If you are running minecraft server you have a properties file in which you can specify the port that the server will communicate over. For publishing a single player world to the lan how do I specify that port number?

I highly doubt that is true. Before I can accept that, did you port forward the 25565?
To open up the LAN world, it will be the same as setting up a regular server. You will have to allow the port through your various firewalls, AND you have to have your router port forward it to your computer.
Once you have that set up you can test to see if the info is getting through:
Oh sorry I misread what you were trying to do entirely, My bad!
But adigregorio is right, 25565 is the port Minecraft operates on, be it the server or LAN. Makes it easier if you HAD to port forward; so instead of Minecraft constantly requiring port access through the firewall/bypassing the firewall you only have to make sure that port is open.

It doesn't use the default port, a seemingly random port is picked every the world is loaded and then published to the lan.
I think what he is saying that when you use the /publish or you click Open to Lan from the menu screen it picks a random port witch is correct, however everyone else is saying that you can just open op a separate minecraft server client. However I wondering if you could set settings to on your server when you open to lan such as pvp the port and flight... so dose any one know where this would be found at..this would also awnser his question if anyone would be to know

To find out which port is opened, just look at the number after the colon ( : )
For example, the LAN IP should look something like this 192.168.0.1:25565
Since it is making random ports, you will have to forward a new one each time you start the game. Or forward a large amount of ports (Some routers let you focus all ports to one computer)
Either way, the number after the colon will be the port number.
(PS I have not done this for awhile now, so if it does not work let me know and I will test it again.)
Is there a easier way to do this instead for me to have to do porting and things just for my friends and I to play? Reply please if there is, It will help a lot.

- Pause the game/Hit ESC
- And above the button "Save and Quit to Title" on the right says "Open To LAN".
- Click that button, and on the bottom left click "Start LAN World"
Doesn't work? Lemme know :3-

Retired StaffOpen your world to LAN, then give your friend your IP address. (Google "What is my IP" if you do not know it)
Your friend will have to "direct connect" to your IP and enter the port 25565
(As for changing it, someone else will have to answer that one.)
-Edit
I assume you want to have your LAN world be able to accept connections from people not on your LAN (IE a LAN SMP )

Enter your IP and the port in here

If it comes back as open, and you still can not connect. I will hunt down what the default port is. But I am almost certain it is 25565
