So, being a new player, I decided to try and download mods. I backed everything up, and was going to try to delete my META-INF file. Being the intelligent person I am, I decided to try and open up minecraft.jar with windows explorer, rather than downloading 7-zip or winrar. All this does is make my mouse flip out and then I have to delete the file. After re-downloading it, the file is no longer marked as an "executable JAR File", but rather simply as a JAR file. I started up the game fine, and so far everything works fine. HOWEVER, there is absolutely no sound at all. I have tried redownloading several times, waiting to see if its just lag, resetting the default opener to Java, but no matter what it won't become executable and the icon won't revert back to the java symbol. I am new to all of this business so if somebody could explain to me how I could fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Game sounds download separately from the initial download. It will start downloading as you play. It normally only takes a couple minutes, but can take as long as 30 minutes.
If you have been playing for longer then that without sound, then you may want to look at your virus scanner and/or firewall.
AVG link checker will block the sound download, so if you have avg you need to turn off link checker, until the sound downloads.
Zone alarm also blocks the sound download, you need to lower the security level of the firewall, until sound downloads.
I'm sure there are others that can interfere, but those are the 2 main ones I am familiar with.
(Also, I'd recommend Winrar for modding, I've seen more people have problems with 7zip)

Retired StaffIt's a trial version, but you can use it forever. Just has a window that you need to close each time it gets opened.
