I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a serperate partition and decided to see how ti would run Minecraft. So, I installed Minecraft as well as the Optifine mod. But for some reason, even though I have the performance setting set to "Max FPS", the game won't go over 30 FPS. This never happened with Windows.
Thanks!
Edit: I'm using Java 6 since Minecraft didn't seem to like 7.

I too have this problem. I have an ATI video card and do NOT, NOT NOT want to install the propietary drivers (they give me total hell). As a recent convert from windows this is my only issue with ubuntu. All settings are at their fastest. I am using technic but I will try
- Vanilla Minecraft
- Allocating more RAM
