Hello everyone! Here's the problem: about a week ago my 7 year old intel macbook pro died. Very tragic. So what did I do? I dug up an old Power PC G5 mac pro that is quite a powerful machine. To my suprise, functionality was destroyed in mac OSX. The video card was giving me a max of 256 colors at an awful 640 X 480 resolution. However, all was not lost! I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu (12.04), burned it to a DVD (all while in 265 colors by the way), wiped everything, and installed it. After I got ubuntu set up I thought "I haven't played minecraft in like 3 days!" so I tried to get it to work under Ubuntu. Here is where the problem begins.
It took me a good day or so to find a PPC version of java for linux, but I eventually found one provided by IBM. Again to my suprise, they had an installable version of JRE 7 which wasn't even available for my intel macbook pro which was stuck at version 6. I installed that right away with some simple terminal commands and thought that would be the end of it. Oh was I wrong.
I downloaded the launcher and could log in fine. It downloaded all the files correctly (I can see them) and after that I simply get a black screen until I force close the launcher. I waited a good 20 minutes too. Any help?
I know in windows you have "%appdata%\.minecraft\" But i'm not a linux user so i don't know if it is diverent.
In my .minecraft folder i have a bin folder, a minecraft_name_src folder, a resources folder, a saves folder, a last login file, a minecraft.exe, a minecraft_name.jar and an options.txt file. which of this do I need to show you?
Sorry if this is a late reply, but try launching the Minecraft Launcher with a command somewhere along the lines of "java -Xmx256m -Xmx256M -cp -jar minecraft.jar"
Xmx is the highest amount of ram it will get, Xms is the lowest. -cp I don't understand and -jar tells it it's a jarfile. Make sure to be in the directory of the launcher in the terminal.
It's fine! The output I get from that command is
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: minecraft/jar
Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: minecraft.jar

at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:294)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:266)
Could not find the main class: minecraft.jar. Program will exit.
I have no clue what that means because I hate java with a passion. Worst coding language ever in my opinion. Anyway, does this mean anything to you? Thanks!
nevermind. I fixed that part. However now it will say done updating and then give me a black screen as usual. The terminal now says

I would like to however, as previously stated, any mac OS will only output in 256 colors with a 640x480 resolution. I have tried from jaguar to leopard and nothing works. I believe there is a port of the liblwjgl library for PowerPC but i haven't had any luck finding it.
What graphics card is it? Did you try to reset the mainboard? It was something about holding command-option-o-f an boot, that should start the OpenFirmware. Then use these three commands, each followed by return:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
The G5 will reboot, now immediately press and hold command-option-p-r until you've heard the start-up-sound at least three times (making it four in total, if in doubt let it bong one more time). You have reset NVRAM and PRAM and the OpenFirmware will collect everything it needs to know about installed hardware from scratch, most probably recognising that the graphics card has more than one resolution.
Its a radeon 9600pro, however ubuntu isnt recognizing the sound card, graphics card, or the processor oddly enough. It just says unknown model PPC970FX altivec supported x2. Both cards say unknown as well. I will try what you said now. Thanks again for the help!
It doesn't appear to have made any difference. Even the mac OSX install disk outputs in 256 colors. Ubuntu however shows multiple resoulution options, but won't let me out of mirrored mode. Anyway, minecraft reacts the same in ubuntu. Everything still says unknown as well. Any other ideas? Thanks
yes sir. I download the linux/jar launcher, navigate into the downloads folder, then launch. One way launches while the other doesnt. For safeboot, wouldn't I have to have the OS installed already? I can't install it because it only outputs in 640x480 and I can't see the install buttons.
I use the apple dvi to vga adapter. Before I do that though, how do I know what the appropriate values are?
Thanks
By the way, I would love to stay on Ubuntu. Don't know if I mentioned that already....

P.S. thanks for responding!

Sorry but I don't have much experience with linux. How do I go about doing that? Thanks

it will launch. Does it matter which method I use?
Thanks
