I am having a problem where occasionally, Minecraft simply fails. It first started giving me a Java error and then it would close. It now does something even worse. When playing, all of a sudden the screen will just go black. The computer is still running but I cannot do CTRL-ALT-DEL to stop the process and get back to the desktop. I am forced to power down the PC and then start up again.
This doesn't happen right away, we will play for a little while and then it happens.
I've tried updating video card drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling Java, forcing updates on Minecraft to "start over" and none have seemed to work.
I see it is possible to get error logs. Will this explain my problem?
My son plays this all the time at least up until the last few weeks. Now it crashes everytime he plays and is begging me to fix it but I just can't figure it out.
Black screens point to java crashes, you could try backing up the saves folder in the .minecraft folder, deleting the .minecraft folder and re-downloading minecraft to re-install it. Alternatively, you could try uninstalling and re-installing java from the control panel and seeing if that resolves the issue. Without a crash report, we really can't tell more.
There is a thread with a batch file that forces a log to write, perhaps searching that up would provide further information.
I tried that too. I only deleted the exe file though, I didn't delete the .minecraft folder in appdata. I did reinstall Java though and the problem still exists. I do not know how to get the logs though and I'd post them, but what I will try to do is remove all Minecraft folders and download again. We'll test without replacing the saves folder and see what happens, but if someone could direct me on how to get the logs for Java, that would be awesome.
I'm having the same problem. I just changed my graphics card from the integrated one my computer came with to a nVidia 630 today. I didn't have any problems before that so not sure if it's connected.
It runs ok for a few mins and then the black screen. I can't do anything except power off and reboot.
My computer is an i5 quad core 64 bit with 8 gb ram and running Windows 7.
If you can't hit ctrl-alt-del and run the task manager, you have other issues than being able to play minecraft. The black screen you describe might be your video card drivers crashing out and locking windows up. Try updating those and see if the behaviour continues.
Go to Computer> Local Disk> Users> Your Computer Name (mine is anoori9000 for example)> AppData> Roaming and the .minecraft folder should be the first thing. delete it. reinstall java 7. go to control panel> Java then go to the java tab, click on the view button, then in the top box go to the part where it says Runtime Paramiters and type '-Xmx1024' EXACTLY WITHOUT QUOTES. it allows more memory on java. Hope it helps. Message me if you have questions.
Sadly, this isn't really a support issue that mojang can help you with. Your computer is having hardware issues. There isn't anything that mojang is equipped to deal with hardware wise. The forum responses are from people like me who might be able to offer specific steps to help resolve an issue, however we do so of our own free will and time. You will probably have better luck taking your computer and video card to a repair facility and having them go over it for you.
I have this problem and have had it for over a year now. After i play for about 12 minutes the screen goes black while the computer keeps running, then I have to restart the computer. I have tried adding more ram, reinstalling minecraft, and uninstalling and reinstalling java but none work. When I played with 100 m of ram It went black after 12 minutes and when I added 3000m of ram it went black after 16minutes. At first when I played it only did this when I was on servers but then it happend when I played on single player worlds. It was so bad at a time I just stopped playing But then about a week ago I started playing agian. Now it shuts off on single player and nearly every server except this one server which since I started playing has yet to get the black screen. I have also deleted many files to get rid of space including 90% of my servers and single player worlds. Please if you know anything help. Please.
OK, so I used to have the same exact problem you guys had and it turned out that for some reason whenever I pressed my comma key on my keyboard it would do this and if I pressed it again it would fix it. I don't know if my minecraft is messed up or what but if it happens when you press a key try to pay attention to which one it is :)!
