Im having an issue. When I have java 7 installed I get this error: fatal error (4) address family not supported
When I have java 6 installed I no longer get the error, but because the version is outdated, I cant run the game. Unless there is something Im missing I dont know how this is to be fixed.

The version isn't outdated, as i believe minecraft uses Java 6. Just force-update minecraft and it should work
The reason I say it is because when I do force update it gets stuck at loading packages. I have reinstalled minecraft and I cant seem to fix this problem.

Try deleting your .minecraft folder, the launcher it self does not matter. Its the files that do.
1) Java 7 - This version of Java prefers to use IPv6, and it is brain dead about it. The minecraft servers are not IPv6 but on your computer it has decided to use IPv6. There are ways to work around this, but Java 6 (latest version to get all security patches) is the simplest.
2) Minecraft file downloading - When you have problems with this, it is an Antivirus or Internet Security package (e.g. AVG LinkScanner) that is interfering with the connections / downloads. You need to whitelist MC or disable the package that is interfering.
if you are on windows 7 you can search up fix and select
"find and fix problems"
select programs and find minecraft
use the reccomended and start it, if this does not work let me know

Retired StaffThan this is confusing. I'd say delete your launcher and all files in the minecraft folder, and try again. Sorry D:
