Ok i pretty made this account just to resolve this problem. I was using minecraft full release version 1.3.2 and exited out of my world to eat lunch. After i ate i got back on only to discover that everything i had built that day seemed to have simply been undone. After about an hour of experimentation i deduced that when i exit my world minecraft does not save the chunks. The same issue is now on all of my worlds and i have already tried several things including getting a fresh .jar, backdating to 1.3.1, restarting my computer, and deleting all off minecrafts files and starting completely fresh. I cant get anything done and it is driving me crazy. Does anybody know how to resolve this issue?
This BS just happened to me today. I put all my valuables in a chest then when I reloaded my world they were just gone. This topic is the only thing I could find about this, it seems very few people know about this problem. I can't even play because of it.
I think it happens because we quit the game before the internal server has time to save the world, so it just gets rolled back to the last save. I did some testing and I think I figured out a temporary fix. When you save and quit your world, instead of just closing Minecraft after that, try loading up a different world in singleplayer (I made a flatland world for this so it loads and generates quicker) then you can leave that world and close Minecraft. I think doing this forces the internal server to finish saving your world before it loads the new one, so then when you quit Minecraft your world should be saved. This seemed to work for me but I don't know if it's 100%.

I am having the same issue with a SMP server! I removed all plugins and tried to place a block and restart the server. The map reverted back to previous state and block was missing from my inventory.
I have the exact same problem I was in creative working on something huge and when i was done i saved and quit and went back in and it was completly gone so i did it again got it finished then saved and quit again went back in wasnt completly gone but most of it was and also in my survival mode every time i get on and get something valuble and put it in my chest like diamond stuff and then i get back on and its gone so i have to switch to creative and get it back i want mojang to fix this problem i am getting sick of it.
The compatibility idea worked perfectly but if you happen to read this, please go on the bug fix and say you had the issue anyways. We shouldn't have to run compatibility for it to work properly. The game should work for us regardless. And thanks for the idea!
I have the problem too. I've been head bashing my keyboard ever since 1.3 came out. I've been looking for backup programs and everything... Nothing works.
That compatibility suggestion won't work for me..
I hate mojang at the moment and my piece of **** excuse for a computer.
Make sure your product works and beta test it more please, It angers us we cant play minecraft anymore. so get your' butts in gear or else I swear I will find a way to make sure you don't sell another game again!

ok i have had this problem for a while. the "run in compatibility" worked. upon fixing lag in my worlds i upgraded my java to a 64 bit (i do not know why it was in a 32 bit i have a 64 bit computer). it fixed my lag but worlds would not save again.
so uninstantiated the 64 bit and reinstalled the 32 bit and it works fine again.
my suggestion for any one still having problems is to check your java and mess around with it.

Not cool.
Maybe, i just posted it in the bug report for 1.3.2
Run it in compatibility mode!
Right click on minecraft(desktop icon)>compatibility>check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:'>Windows 95.
This is for windows xp. But it should be similar for windows 7.
It worked for me.

Right click, then properties, THEN compatibility, check the compatibility mode box
