i recently wiped my laptop and i reinstalled the SAME EXACT drivers as i had b4 the wipe
and b4 the wipe i was able to play WITHOUT a SINGLE problem
PLEASE HELP

How do you update the GPU drivers?

I have the same problem.. it happend for me after a update (cant remember wich one).
Im ronning MC on my Dell laptop (@work) and never had any problems..
Now i cannot run it anymore.. i have updated to the latest (tho old card and drivers) driver version known for my card.

i tried everything, but it wont work anymore.. sadly
no more minecraft in my lunchbreaks i guess

no i have this error since a few months now.. even tried to update directx (had latest version) .
some time ago i had this error for the first time(about a year ago) and an update for my GPU was the solution then, but now there isnt a newer driver (too old stuff i guess). So someting must have changed and i cannot play..

You can try disabling DirectX and DirectDraw if you're on XP (that worked on my laptop before) but it will probably lag a lot.

tried that.. says i have the latest driver.. :S i think ill throw this crappy machine out of the window .. pffff
second thought.. no .. better not i still wil get the same laptop from my employee.. they have plenty in stock..

damn so frustrating if a favorite game wont run anymore..

I used to have this for my other (older) Video card, the only way i was able to fix it was to by a new video card. Not even updating the other one worked.

I am also having this same error message. Trying to get my MC fix on my work laptop without any success. HP ProBook 6450b. Manufacturer says it should have an "ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 540v" adapter but I don't see it and it seems to be defaulting to the on-board Intel adapter, because it comes up as "Chip type: Intel(R) HD Graphics (Core i5)" in DXDIAG. According to manufacturer this would be an Intel Calpella chipset with QM57/HM57.

Tried : Installing ATI drivers. This failed due to not finding an ATI adapter
Tried : Removing old Intel drivers, then installing new Intel drivers. Installed OK but same MC error.
Tried : Copying the MC options.txt file from my home PC and editing all the graphics options to false or low. Same MC error.

NOTE : MC starts, and checks for an update and then goes to the error screen. However, it never creates the options.txt by itself. I had to import one from my other PC. Not sure if that's telling.

Hopefully someone has other suggestion ?

I have a small update on this issue. I was able to start an older version of minecraft (1.2.0_02 Beta) and it was accepting software OpenGL. I was able to play in offline mode, but was unable to connect to my Minecraft server, probably because it is running 1.3 server software, I would guess.

So if you want the singleplayer game to run, this could be a workaround to get your fix. This might work for the father who posted earlier, trying to let his son play on his laptop.

I have a legit account for minecraft.. so have my both sons
I installed a (not so legit) win 7 on another HD on that same laptop.. same error..
i guess there are some cards that wont work anymore.. i tried to install World of Tanks and that worked (laggy and unplayable, but no errors)

well.. no more MC on my work laptop then :S

Okay.. i found a working workaround on this forum

i copied the minecraft.exe to c:\ then renamed it to minecraft.jar
made a mc.bat file and put"" java -Xmx800m -jar "C:\Minecraft.jar "" in it
run the bat file and mincecraft wil work!
