First some background. Single player, offline mode, survival.
I had a pretty nice game started, but it crashed and wouldn't show in the load game menu. So I created a new game, and copied the files over to the new game to try to restore the previous version. For the most part it worked with the exception of when I spawned, I started in the middle of a mountain and had to dig up.
Now, when I make new maps they are always centered in the same place, no matter where I craft them at. Does anyone know where this data is kept? And possibly how to fix it?
I have a feeling that the problem you're having is less about your restored file and more about the Crafting process of your Map.
I've experienced a similar frustrating experience as you have where no matter where I Crafted the Map (including all of its base parts like Compass and Paper) that the resulting Map was ALWAYS a duplicate of some Map I already had either in my inventory or a Map I owned and kept in a Chest elsewhere. Recently, I have discovered that SHIFT + CLICKing the Map to bring it into my Inventory (what I am used to doing since I usually craft multiples of items) is the culprit and cause of my problem.
For whatever reason, it seems that the SHIFT part of the clicking is what is forcing the map to duplicate another map in your possession.
That said, if you simply pick up the Map normally after Crafting it, you should be able to pick up a New Map whose center coordinates are at your current Crafting location.
Just some fun facts about my own experience before I figured this out:
- I Crafted a duplicate of a Map already in my Hotbar.
- I Crafted a duplicate of a Map already in my Possession, BUT in a Chest halfway across the Map from where I was Crafting the Map
If you are running a snapshot, I believe there's a new feature in 1.4 that causes the map to align to a basic grid pattern. To more easily craft a set of maps that map out your world without overlapping.
