I am having this exact same problem on my 2008 desktop but not on my 2012 laptop that I just bought back in March so it must have something to do with the older computers. The only other thing I can think of is the mods if it is a modded client. Im going to play around with it and unmod mine on my desktop and hopfully get it to work if I do I'll reply with my solution.

ive ran a multiplayer server with more then twenty people on this computer before and never had any problem at all....
i honestly dont think its a problem with bad computers...... and everything in my computer has been upgraded just recently like the last year...... so i REALY REALY dont be;live it is a problem with old computers......
as such we have had people other then me with ok computers have this problem as well........
plus like i said this computer im on isnt like a super computer but it is deff good enuff to play minecraft.......
if it can play skyrim and sims and half life and portal and krysis all with no lagg..... then i dont think at all its a bad computer...... and should run minecraft. (sry for the repetition) BUT at anyrate if it is and turns out to be a computer problem..... there should still be some solutuion for one and for two.....we should find like absolute proof that that is the problem (if there is any to be had) and possible solutions to it?
one more thing is if it was a computer problem why do random bits save if it was not good enuff to handle a server then it wouldnt save at all.... or it would only save the things at the begining not random peices? i know quite a bit about computers having built this one and worked in many shops and what not plus im building one rite now! idk of anyone having a problem with any other games that run servers.... >.> that save random bits but not all. DOESNT MAKE SINCE at a technical veiw of the issue!
i think the the fact that this bug dosen't happen on servers is that server keep running after quiting.
that could possib ly be true. and another update as far as it being a problem with a crappy computer...
ITS NOT!!!! I had this problem and on my freinds 2008 ascics laptop did not have the problem even tho it has a slower processor then mine less ram them mine not a very good vid card unlike mine and he even has less room on the hardrives!!!!!! So It Is NOT a Computer Problem!!!!!! or not soley based off that anyways
This BS just happened to me today. I put all my valuables in a chest then when I reloaded my world they were just gone. This topic is the only thing I could find about this, it seems very few people know about this problem. I can't even play because of it.
I think it happens because we quit the game before the internal server has time to save the world, so it just gets rolled back to the last save. I did some testing and I think I figured out a temporary fix. When you save and quit your world, instead of just closing Minecraft after that, try loading up a different world in singleplayer (I made a flatland world for this so it loads and generates quicker) then you can leave that world and close Minecraft. I think doing this forces the internal server to finish saving your world before it loads the new one, so then when you quit Minecraft your world should be saved. This seemed to work for me but I don't know if it's 100%.
I wish I had found this sooner but I stopped looking around once I figured out how to fix it. I've been using this technique for that past week and it hasn't failed me once. Hopefully this works for you guys too.
I really wish this problem didn't exist, but 1.3 is not very optimized, so older/less powerful machines don't have enough time to save before exiting. At this point I'm looking for some sort of force-save mod, so I can just save the world ingame.

Well you can change they rate at which optifine auto saves your world. However I still get the roll back bug.
I run a hosted server, and this problem is occurring on our server also, so it's not restricted to single player, and it's NOT a matter of your computer quality, or your computer being too slow to save before quitting. This is apparently an issue within 1.3, which Mojang has yet to acknowledge or remedy.
