I've been trying to get a LAN game going for my nephews and I to play on but I can't seem to get it to work. I've created a new world, opened up the LAN to them on my game, they go to multiplayer and it finds the LAN game but when they try to connect it just times out and won't connect them. What am I missing? There are no firewalls running except for windows firewall but I added minecraft to the allowed programs list. We're on a home network with all computers running windows 7 and on the same internet connection. Is anyone else having this problem, and does anyone know how to fix it? Thanks
Yes, we all have separate, paid for accounts. I usually run a server for us all but thought this LAN would be much easier as we're all on the same connection and sitting side by side.
Okay, took a while but I finally got it! I had windows firewall off but it still wouldn't work. This morning I turned it back on, and added java to the list of allowed programs. Thought I had everything covered yesterday but I was wrong. I allowed all java platforms public and private access, same with minecraft, and was able to create and log into a LAN game. Now my nephews are happily playing and building.
Had a similar problem. 4 Computers, two running windows 7, one running windows 8, and one running Linux. The windows 8 machine couldn't games from any of the other computers, they couldn't see games it hosted. Firewall is off, Java is set to public & private access, and on the latest version. Help!

Try using direct connect, it worked for me. I was doing it wrong.
1. Run "cmd" without the quotes.
2. Once in Command Prompt type "ipconfig" without the quotes.
3. Find the one that says something like "Wireless LAN adapter WI-FI" Under that heading, there should be something that says "IPv4 Address"
4. In Minecraft under direct connect (on the person who is trying to connect) type in the "IPv4 Address" at the end put a : colon, and add the port number that Minecraft gave you when you opened to LAN.
It should in the end, look something like ***.***.**.***:***** The * of course being numbers. Hope this helps!

Took me weeks to figure this out.
Now I never have any problems connecting to LAN games.
