Hi guys. I didn't know exactly where to post, since this is multiplayer-related but not server-side. I made a post a couple of days ago when trying 12w30a/b/c/e and then pre-release. I spent like 3 days trying to narrow the problem down, and at first it seemed like it was a problem with the snapshots. Today I finally found out what the real problem is, but I'm clueless as to what to do.
This is the problem: as of 12w30a on to 1.3 pre-release, when going into the server list, all of them show pings over 1000 ms. On top of that, my very own server (hosted in the same pc I play Minecraft in) shows a ping of over 1000 ms (when it should be 10-20 ms since it's the localhost). When clicking "Join Server" it freezes MC for around 10-15 seconds, sometimes even more, and then joins (or says I can't due to having a different version). However, servers which specify a different port other than the default one 25565 (for example, 74.234.64.23:25575) actually load perfectly. Servers with an IP of, for example, mcpvpserver.org or 74.234.64.23 will not work as intended and will freeze momentarily and show extremely high pings.
The thing is, none of this happened in snapshot 12w27a, 1.2.5, etc. Today however, I discovered that this problem seems to be due to my router, since using other connection seems to fix the problem. My router is a 2wire 2700 series. One thing to keep in mind is, absolutely none of this happens in previous versions. I have checked the firewall, disabled it and the AV, re-installed Java, done a clean installation of MC, tested on different PCs (all connected to the same internet), changed some router configurations, but nothing seems to fix this. Seeing as how the 1.3 pre-release is 99% identical to 1.3, there's no reason to wait until the release.
So I really need some help as to what I should do regarding this issue. It clearly seems to be router-side, considering that simply changing to another WiFi solves this. However, since this did not happen in previous versions, I'm puzzled as to what was introduced in 12w30a and the following snapshots that could be causing this issue which seems to be port-related. As if connecting to servers which port is 25565 conflicts somehow. Any help/instruction is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Can you bypass the router, or the modem built into it?
I have a 2wire 2700 series, and it is directly hooked to my PC while the rest of the computers get the signal via WiFi. Other than that I don't think I quite understand your question.
He means take out your 2wire 2700 series, and hook it directly up to the internet. and see if the issue maybe is within the router
Sorry for the delay, I've been awfully busy and kind of forgot this issue.
Again, I don't understand what you mean. So I take out my 2wire 2700 series, and hook "it" directly up to the internet? Hook exactly what? Without the 2wire there is no internet, so the fact that I have to take out the 2wire makes it impossible for me to get any kind of internet at all in any pc.
That might have to do with servers not having updated to 1.3.1 yet.
Anyways now that the update is finally out and everyone is mostly updating, I've seen a couple of people having similar problems so at least I know it's not just me. While it does seem to be router-related, it is irritating because this did not happen in 1.2.5 and in early versions of the 1.3 snapshot. Something was changed and completely broke multiplayer for some of us. I tried testing this issue in a friend's house who also has AT&T and it worked perfectly there.

When you update (unless it's a vanilla server), you have to wait for them to update both Bukkit and its plugins. Most servers will tell you beforehand not to update if you wish to continue playing on the server.
More on topic, I still haven't found out a fix to this issue. There are many, many issues with the merge, but this has me troubled as I have to rely on someone else's connection to have a decent multiplayer experience. Something is really broken in this update, and worst thing is, since it's not a constant bug (that is to say, it doesn't happen to everyone) it is even harder to pinpoint.
I don't know if this is the same problem your having but It's really making me angry because I had it for the last 4 days. Somone please help me.
EDIT: 2 days
Not the same problem. I can connect to servers, but the ping is ridiculous and it's related to the port of the server. In short, servers that run on port 25565 will cause my MC to freeze for over 10 seconds and display a ridiculous ping, that is, if the list polls the servers at all. However when it polls the servers with a port that is other than 25565 (e.x: 72.231.45.62:25575) it will show a normal ping and not freeze.
I am having the same issue. I can't even connect to my own server as it is on the port 25565. I think something happened with the recent update that did this. My minecraft ran fine until this update came out. I get 15000ms before servers pop up to connect to then when I join it also freezes for 15 seconds. What is causing this!??! It needs to be fixed!

Same exact problem here, my own localhost server displays such pings and freezes, which is ridiculous. Mojang needs to look into this, they messed up something in 1.3 for some of us.
I'm having the exact same problem. My Minecraft used to ping every server on my list within 5 seconds but now it's taking over a minute to ping just half of them. About two of them ping very quickly though, as fast as they used to.

Do the servers that work happen to specify a different port such as for example 72.341.23.53:25575 ?
I am just another victim of this problem. Unfornately i don't have anything else to contribute to this thread.
If it helps though, in 1.2.5 when i was using spoutcraft i had the exact same problem when connecting to my dynamic dns address. I switched from the DDNS to the IP address and it fixed the problem.
However in the vanilla client running 1.3.1 this does not rectify the problem but it might help to narrow the problem somehow.
Yeah, same problem here, I noticed it after updating to 1.3.1, and like you said, it didn't happen in 1.2.5, and when I downgraded, the problem stopped. Really annoying, and it makes joining some popular servers pretty much impossible. D:

Thank you for making this video!

Tried changing the port onm our server to 25575 but then it wouldn't connect at all.
Probably gonna roll back to 1.2.5 today
