In single player, I was mapping out an area via boat, with the map in my hand, in Peaceful setting. I was making canals through a swamp/jungle, mapping also, when I just suddenly died for no apparent reason. I had full health, iron armor, and as I said, it was on peaceful, the only distinguishing circumstance was that the boat I was in was in the middle of one the canals I had dug to let it pass, going against water current, when it got stuck slightly in the middle of the currents, basically it was between two currents, going opposite directions, so it was stuck in place, and it started bobbing up and down. I was in the boat still while this was happening when all of the sudden, I just died. There was no waterfall drowning me, there was no animal attacking me, the water was only 1 block deep, had full health, etc. etc. After respawning, I went back to see if I could recover anything of mine. I was, but not what I wanted: the boat was intact, but none of my items were present, including my only map, redstone, and gold. I think somehow the boat killed me, but no idea how. Considering it took only 2 punches to destroy the boat normally, or simply colliding with an animal in the water to destroy the boat while only sending me into the water but with full health, well the boat should have been destroyed. Just a bug report I wanted to make.
It was not fall damage, I was still in the boat when I died, and I had been getting in and out multiple times. It was extremely random. I had seen something like it in another game, a first person shooter, where you would be standing, when all of the sudden, usually due to an elevator or rising platform, you got squished against the ceiling. One of the things that would happen before you died was the screen would start shaking(similar to rapid bobbing motion the boat made when it got caught between the two currents) and after a few seconds of that shaking, you would die. The only difference being that there was no ceiling above me while in the boat.
Ok, I reproduce the conditions of the "accident" and I think I know what happened, though I still think its a bug and will explain why after I describe what happened. I said that I was in a boat between two currents, so I built another boat, went to the location of the incident and did the same thing to see what happened. It was not the bobbing up and down that killed me. It was my own player's propelling the boat added to the speed from the current and then hitting ground. It happened a bit slower this time, but still one hit ko, full health. The boat hit a sand block after getting out from between the two currents and onto one current. Right when it hit the sand block is when I died. The reason its a bug is that the boat doesn't get destroyed. I have destroyed boats by running them into chickens in the water and survived, but in this case i run into a piece of sand at speed and my boat is fine, but I die. Does not make much sense (unless this is a simulation of driving without a seatbelt and stopping to quickly.)
I had the boat death happen to me today. Running 1.3.2 I noticed a lot of collision problems, mobs going halfway through the ground, I would get stuck on nothing, etc. What really sucks about this glitch was it was in a Hardcore game. I had just found the End Portal. I went up my mine shaft to the surface and as soon as I clicked to get into the boat, I died. It made the crunch sound as if I fell. I kept having problems before with the boat acting weird as I was getting in and out earlier but this was plain crazy.
Personally, I think it might be the cross currents of the water itself giving you a OHKO suffocation damage - boat or no boat - because the same exact thing happened when I somehow - don't ask me how - Spawned in a new world Seed UNDERWATER and caught in a crossfire of colliding currents which was only made visible to me when I invited a friend to come examine that new world Seed (and that odd OHKO-upon-spawning issue). It was an instantaneous OHKO even though I had enough 'air' to survive otherwise and I KNOW that there were no mobs present because I was on Peaceful mode in all the times that this happened.
Though this issue is said to be 'fixed' in 1.3.2, I don't think it's fully fixed as some people's situations are suggesting.
For myself, I'm still on 1.3.1.
